About the Adi Vinayaka Temple
Adi Vinayaka is a manifestation of the Hindu god Ganesha (Vinayaka) that depicts Ganesha with a human head, before his father Shiva beheaded him. This form of Ganesha is seldom worshipped, and only a handful of shrines are devoted to it, including one near Koothanur in Tamil Nadu. Thilatharpanapuri is considered a sacred place for pitru tharpanam, a ritual performed to pay homage to departed ancestors. Adi Vinayaka derives from the word ādi, literally meaning "first", while Vinayaka is another name of the deity.

According to local tradition, the temple is connected with Lord Rama. It is believed that Rama performed rituals here for his father, King Dasharatha, after returning from his exile. The site is therefore also associated with ancestral rites and is visited by devotees seeking blessings for their families. This temple is also known worldwide as Tiltarpanpuri. People worship on the riverbank to appease their ancestors, but religious rituals are performed in the temple. Tiltarpan means "city dedicated to ancestors."
