Michigan quarterback Bryce Underwood has been criticized for his performance in the Wolverines’ controversial Week 1 13-12 win over the Western Michigan Broncos.
This week, Michigan coach Kyle Whittingham suggested Underwood’s QB1 status in Ann Arbor was not set in stone, prompting former Pro Bowler T. J. Houshmandzadeh to urge the quarterback to leave the program.

Ex-NFL WR Urges Bryce Underwood To Leave Michigan
During Wednesday’s segment of the “Speakeasy” podcast, Houshmandzadeh was adamant that Underwood should leave Michigan after Whittingham’s comments about his QB1 status.
“If I’m Bryce Underwood, if I play good or bad, I’m done with Michigan, I’m done. Good or bad.” Houshmandzadeh said.
“I’m out of there. Did you see the way he was like, ‘Wait, he said that? That’s cool, I didn’t see that, It’s cool.’ He should have gone to LSU to begin with. You go to LSU, you start at LSU, you’re gonna be a first-round pick. Did you not just watch the quarterback before you went to Michigan?
“Emmanuel Acho just said that they didn’t play through him. You think they’re gonna play through you? I want him to succeed because Kyle Whittingham has all but said Bryce Underwood is getting benched this year. He’s getting benched. And if I play well and I’m Bryce Underwood, I am leaving Michigan.”
Houshmandzadeh concluded by pointing out that we rarely see coaches make these statements, especially when it pertains to a quarterback. “They rarely make these statements publicly,” the former Bengals receiver said.

Underwood was the No. 1 prospect in the class of 2025 and was highly recruited by the Wolverines. The former five-star prospect immediately became the Wolverines’ QB1 as a freshman and was widely expected to take a big step in his second season. After he was hired as Michigan coach, Whittingham met with Underwood to convince the quarterback to remain in Ann Arbor.
Last season, Underwood managed 2,428 passing yards on 60.3% completion, 11 touchdowns and 9 interceptions, adding 392 rushing yards and six scores. Underwood, who is ranked No. 54 in the PFN CFB QB rankings, has a 71.5 PFN QB Impact score (No. 113 in college football).

During his postgame news conference, Underwood addressed Whittingham’s comments about his QB1 status.
“Um, there were comments about that?” Underwood said. “That’s cool. I didn’t see that. It’s cool.”
Underwood had a mixed performance against the Broncos. The second-year quarterback went 12 of 22 for 170 passing yards, adding 47 rushing yards and one touchdown on 9 carries.
Despite the inconsistent performance, Underwood delivered when it mattered most, launching a Hail Mary that JJ Buchanan caught for the game-winning touchdown.
