Many Manchester United fans consider Bruno Fernandes the best signing since Sir Alex Ferguson left the club, and for good reason.

At first, Fernandes was a shadow striker, often making runs beyond the centre-forward, then he became more of a playmaker, before dropping back into defensive midfield under Rúben Amorim. 

While has now returned to the No.10 role, Fernandes also inherited the captaincy in July 2023 under Erik ten Hag. 

The former captain was Harry Maguire, who had struggled to continue his impressive form after Ole Gunnar Solskjær's sacking. 

What Maguire told Fernandes after captaincy change

Replacing your teammate as captain is never an easy situation, and as Bruno Fernandes said on Inside Carrington, it is usually when they are leaving the club. But that was not the case for the Portuguese midfielder, although it did not stop him from acting as a leader. 

"I haven't changed the way I behave on or off the pitch because I got the captaincy," he said on Manchester United's podcast. 

"I was very lucky that through that period I've had a lot of respect from Harry [Maguire] by the way I treated him and the way he treated me."

Since then, Maguire has turned his Manchester United career around and is now an important player once again, but at that time, he received lots of hate and abuse, which makes the words he told Fernandes even more noble. 

Fernandes continued: "I still remember now, the words he said to me were: 'If I had to lose the captaincy to someone, I'm happy that it's you because I think you deserve it, I think you're going to be a great captain for us.'"

Bruno Fernandes has since guided Manchester United to an FA Cup win and a Europa League final appearance.

Given he is set to turn 32 in just four days, it would be safe to have presumed that Fernandes would be starting to slow down this season, but his start to the campaign has been anything but a slow one. 

While he struggled against Hull City (like the whole team), he netted three goals against Ipswich Town and picked up an assist for Bryan Mbeumo. The captain also nearly scored from the halfway line. 

There may be times this season, more than any since his move to Old Trafford, when he is named on the bench. Mason Mount, Matheus Cunha, Shea Lacey and more can take his place as the No.10, but that does not mean Fernandes is becoming less important. 

If Manchester United achieve any success under Michael Carrick this season, Bruno Fernandes will be the key to it. But unlike in years gone by, he will have help from the star-studded squad around him.
