South Carolina tumbled to a 4-8 record in 2025, finishing 1-7 in the rugged Southeastern Conference, and brought in Kendal Briles to revive the offense behind third-year starting quarterback LaNorris Sellers, who threw for 2,437 yards and 13 touchdowns with eight interceptions while running for 270 yards and five scores. Sellers’ wide receiver corps took a hit in fall camp with season-ending injuries to Jayden Sellers and Jayden Gibson, while tackle Josiah Thompson is also out for the year. The Gamecocks landed in the No. 11 spot in the SEC preseason poll.
Kent State stopped a 21-game losing streak in last season’s opener and nearly made a bowl game, finishing 5-7, including a 4-4 mark in the Mid-American Conference, and bringing back quarterback Dru DeShields, who threw for 2,030 yards and 18 TDs against just three picks in 11 starts. Da’Realyst Clark, a preseason All-America return specialist, leads a veteran receiving group, with the defense — ranked No. 127 last season — the key to breaking through the bowl-eligibility threshold. The Golden Flashes ranked eighth in the MAC preseason ratings.
The teams meet for just the second time, with the Gamecocks taking the first contest in a lopsided fashion back in 1995.
