‘Absolute cowards’: Criticism mounts as Caitlin Clark and Sophie Cunningham won’t address rally tied to Cunningham’s trans comments

All-stars Caitlin Clark scored 32 and 28 points, respectively, on efficient shooting numbers, with Clark dishing 7 assists as well. Sophie Cunningham also added 11 points off the bench after going 3-for-6 from the field.
Of course, the strong showing from Cunningham comes after the media frenzy surrounding her comments on trans athletes in an ESPN profile on her.
“I got a lot of negative feedback about me hating trans. And I’m like, ‘I never once said that,'” Cunningham said in the feature. “I think that I am here to extend love. But I also think with that love is truth, being honest. And I want to protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn’t have to go against biological men.”

However, after the game, neither Clark nor Cunningham was made available for a postgame media session to address the comments, despite a rally being held before the game to celebrate Cunningham for her comments.
“Caitlin Clark and Sophie Cunningham were not made available for non-basketball questions postgame,” reported Roberta Rodrigues. “Clark was listed as one of the Fever players for the (postgame) press conference but was replaced by Kelsey Mitchell despite being the highest scorer and assist leader on the team.”
Rodrigues even revealed why it would’ve been important for Clark to address her teammates’ comments.
“Caitlin Clark’s stance on this situation is as important her Fever teammates’. I asked Kelsey Mitchell and Monique Billings too. Clark is the most popular player on the team, friends with Cunningham and extremely influential. Her thoughts are more than relevant.”

“Now they don’t wanna talk?”
Many fans agreed with Rodrigues and weren’t afraid to let Clark and Cunningham hear it for not taking accountability, especially in light of the rally tied to Cunningham.
“CC and Sophie are absolute f*cking cowards,” one fan posted on X.
“So now they don’t wanna talk?” another person asked.
“What it truly is…is fear. Fear that their fav will be put in an irreversible position that hurts her brand. They want her coddled. The truth is it’s EXTREMELY common for athletes to be questioned about controversies involving teammates,” someone else wrote.
There was a statement
Rodrigues did ask the members of the Fever who were made available to the media, but a team spokesperson stepped in and addressed the situation.
“I’ll jump in on that. We do have an organizational statement I’ll read. Um, so neither our organization nor Sophie had any knowledge of this demonstration and no contact with its organizers. Our only goal as a team, whether at home or away, is to win basketball games and make Fever fans for life, and we are united on that mission.”
The reality of the situation, as Elle Duncan recently noted, is that the sooner Clark addresses situations like these head-on, the sooner the noise around them will go away.
