Shams Charania Reveals Jaylen Brown Wanted LeBron James To Choose 76ers
Speaking on Tuesday’s edition of ESPN’s “NBA Today,” Charania revealed Brown is more than happy to play alongside James in Philadelphia.
“There’s no LeBron James in Philadelphia without Jaylen Brown. Jaylen Brown was the guy that led to this domino of LeBron James even thinking of going to Philadelphia,” Charania said. “My understanding is Jaylen Brown wanted LeBron James there. He did his part to recruit him there. … One person around Brown told me today he’s gonna approach this with no ego.”
The Boston Celtics stunned the NBA world by sending Brown to the 76ers earlier this month. Brown was openly on the trade block, as various rumors circulated about his strained relationship with members of the front office and fellow All-NBA teammate Jayson Tatum.
Ultimately, the Celtics shipped Brown to an Eastern Conference rival, perhaps a strong indication that the relationship between Brown and the organization couldn’t be salvaged. Now, Brown heads to Philadelphia after having the best season of his career. However, Charania’s report suggests the five-time All-Star’s mindset is one of winning a championship, which would be the best revenge against the Celtics.
James is heading back to the East for his final chapter to play alongside Brown, established 76ers stars Tyrese Maxey and Joel Embiid, as well as rising second-year guard VJ Edgecombe. With five players on the roster capable of elite offensive production every night, Charania believes James will take on a secondary role and emphasize playmaking, which essentially matches Brown’s “no ego” mindset.
James is reportedly excited to play with Maxey, who has arguably become the face of the franchise. Maxey averaged a career-high 28.3 points per game last season and has blossomed into one of the league’s elite guards.
However, the 76ers’ championship goals will likely hinge on Embiid. The 2023 NBA MVP has infamously never taken the 76ers to the conference finals, which adds even more pressure next season as the organization looks to move past that hurdle and then clear another one by winning the NBA Finals.
Embiid’s reduced workload could help him stay healthy in the 2026-27 campaign, significantly improving the 76ers’ chances. Charania’s report is a sign that Brown is ready to sacrifice, and perhaps Embiid and the team’s other stars are ready to do the same.
