Amid the struggles of a defense that ranks 25th in points allowed this season, the Dallas Cowboys made a sizable shift earlier this week. The change? Hiring former NFL head coach Mike Pettine as a senior defensive assistant to work with Christian Parker and the Cowboys’ defense.

Cowboys team owner Jerry Jones went on the radio earlier this week to discuss the move. While doing so, he revealed that Parker would move up to the coaching booth to radio the play calls to his defense. Yet, Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer apparently didn’t get the memo. Or if he did, he doesn’t necessarily agree with it.

Brian Schottenheimer At Odds With Jerry Jones?

Last week, coach Schottenheimer was taking some criticism from Skip Bayless for essentially being Jones’ ‘yes man’ on the staff. Though Bayless actually called the Cowboys coach Jones’ “puppet.”

Yet, in Schottenheimer’s Wednesday media availability with the Dallas media, in which he countered Jones’ claims that Parker would be moving up to the coaching booth rather than making calls from the field, he went against Bayless’ theory.

Now, Shan Shariff of 105.3 The Fan suggests that the Cowboys’ head coach just put himself in a precarious position.

“You made a big mistake,” Shariff claims. “You should not have said that. This will be the beginning of the end for you. After Jerry Jones came on this show with you guys on Tuesday and said Christian Parker was going to the booth, Brian Schottenheimer did not necessarily agree or go along with that yesterday.”

Here was Coach Schottenheimer’s quote from earlier in the week that Shariff was referring to.

“Yeah, no, none of those decisions have been finalized,” He said. “You know, we’ve had conversations throughout this whole process. You guys know last weekend was a busy weekend for us.”

Schottenheimer then explained, “We spent hours speaking with CP (Christian Parker), talking about different things and options, and with Jerry and Stephen [Jones] going over the game and things we need to do in all three phases to get better. As we work through the week, we’ll figure out what’s best and we’re going to do whatever we think gives us the best chance to win.”

At the time, it was still possible that the plan to move Parker up to the booth had been set in stone. Yet, in the spirit of coaches doing their best to give their opponents as few answers as possible ahead of the upcoming test, Schottenheimer may have been trying to redirect attention elsewhere.

By Friday, however, Schottenheimer had settled the matter. Parker will remain on the sideline against Green Bay, while Pettine will work from the coaches’ booth.
