Frank Lampard has now seen his Coventry side follow four Premier League defeats (scoring none and conceding ten goals) with two wins (scoring five goals and conceding only one).
Funny how things turn out at times…
Coventry City were dominated for most of the match but Newcastle United wasted chance after chance, whilst the hosts only very occasionally got close to United’s goal, only 16 touches of the ball by their players in the NUFC penalty area and yet scored four times and his the woodwork as the visitors did all they could in key moments to help Coventry score.
Frank Lampard though describing it as a “complete performance” by Coventry City…“Very, very satisfying. It is so hard to win. We played like the team that want to be here. There is so much spirit and energy in the group and we know we are going to have to suffer a lot this season. The work ethic of the boys and the belief, you get what you deserve which is great finishes. We haven’t quite had that rub of the green this season that would help us nick more points. It was a complete performance. we have to keep our feet on the ground. It’s a great feeling for the players to feel that.”
Sven Botman pulling it back to 2-1 with 20 minutes to go with Newcastle United dominating the possession and chances, the Coventry City boss: “It was a long 20 minutes and it’s a fantastic strike but we also did some good defensive work. That was a worry but we started to make some changes and that’s when you are asking for good lads that train all week to com on and add to the performance. If we don’t have that spirit, we haven’t got a chance. We need everybody. A lot of the lads knew that tonight.”
Frank Lampard going on to add: “You have to ride a bit of luck but we did it. Quality goals went in. Sometimes you have to deserve it. It is nervy because two is never enough. They were causing us problems. Stay in the game in those moments and the third goal was a big moment for us mentally.”
