Off to a resounding start to the 2026-27 season, the New York Rangers ran into a serious speed bump Friday night when star goaltender Igor Shesterkin sustained a scary-looking injury and required help to leave to the ice midway through the second period against the Washington Capitals at Capital One Arena.

Shesterkin jammed his right skate against the far post when he scrambled back toward his crease at 8:20 of the second after challenging a wide-open Pierre-Luc Dubois on right wing. Shesterkin’s right leg recoiled awkwardly as his momentum carried him hard into the post, which did not give nor come off its moorings.

New York’s star goalie fell back into his net and writhed in pain, and was quickly attended to by the trainer. Rangers defensemen Sean Durzi and Marcus Pettersson helped Shesterkin to the bench, where he was further helped to the dressing room.

Dylan Garand replaced Shesterkin with the scored tied 1-1. Shesterkin had stopped 13 of 14 shots to start the game, allowing only a long Slap shot by Washington defenseman Timothy Liljegren through traffic to beat him glove side less than two minutes before the injury.
