A fourth-and-10 pass from Eastwood's 28-yard line fell incomplete as Genoa suffered a 28-21 setback in the Northern Buckeye Conference. The Comets needed a victory to forge a three-way tie atop the league, with the Eagles and Otsego.
"One of our goals just got taken off our list," Genoa coach Bill Fisher said of defending the conference crown. "We want to play for things like that. Being in these moments makes you better, stronger, wiser. You grow as human beings."
Eastwood immediately matched each of the Comets' touchdowns with one of its own. Eastwood tossed an eight-yard scoring pass for the final margin early in the fourth quarter.
Jax Magnone threw an incomplete pass on fourth-and-goal from the 11 with 4 minutes, 21 seconds remaining. Alex Materni collected a sack on second down to help set up Genoa's final possession.
"I felt confident they'd try to run it and take some time off the clock," Fisher said. "You can call things more aggressively. We brought some heat."
Materni ran in from eight yards to open the scoring.
"He's one of the toughest guys I've ever coached," Fisher said. "Whether it's injuries, work ethic, preparation. I'm glad he's on our side. He's a middle linebacker and tailback; he's going to get banged up. A wrist here. An ankle there."
Quarterback Myles Mollenhauer pushed through from the 1 after a tough catch from Magnone and another reception for Tommy Braun. Mollenhauer threw an incomplete pass on fourth-and-11 from Eastwood's 23 with 17 seconds left in the second quarter.
"We had so many chances," Fisher said. "Every drive — we had opportunities."
Braun ran in from the 2 and Magnone caught a conversion pass for a 21-14 advantage in the third quarter. Adam Knight blocked the point-after attempt after the Eagles responded with a touchdown. Eastwood intercepted a pass, before advancing for the go-ahead score and conversion pass.
"(Eastwood) didn't make as many mistakes," Fisher said.
