On Saturday, KSR’s Jack Pilgrim reported that Kentucky was hiring Aboya, who has been the head coach of the NBA Academy Africa program, which is located in Senegal and is run by the NBA. He’s served in that role until its closing this year and has helped produce professional basketball players, so this hire will give Kentucky ties within the international recruiting scene.

Aboya formerly worked as an assistant and player development coach for the Iowa Wolves of the NBA G League. He’s also served as head coach of the Cameroon Men’s National Team in FIBA competitions.

As a player, Aboya played for the UCLA Bruins from 2005-09 and was part of the winningest class in Bruins program history (123 wins).

In the pros, Aboya primarily played in several overseas leagues, with a few NBA G League stints as well.

Aboya also has a connection to Kentucky recruiting target Chreif Millogo, who is originally from West Africa.

On paper, this looks like a significant hire for Pope as he looks to take high school and international recruiting to the next level for Kentucky Basketball.
