‘I’m Going To Make It Work’ – Joe Burrow Changes Stance on ‘Emotional’ Plan for Bengals Offense After Week 4 Loss

· Yahoo Sports

On Wednesday, quarterback Joe Burrow walked back his “throw it more” comment. He said it was an emotional reaction following the Cincinnati Bengals’ 22-17 Week 4 loss against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The Bengals running game collapsed at Paycor Stadium, with Zac Taylor’s team recording only 23 yards on 15 attempts. Seeing this, the quarterback was visibly frustrated in the post-match conference. When asked what the solution to this issue would be, the 29-year-old said, “My response to that would be, let’s throw it more.”

His key targets – Ja’Marr Chase (concussion) and Tee Higgins (abductor injury) were also out for the Week 4 game. “Because I know we’re great at it,” Burrow said. “Because I know that’s what I do best, and we’re really pass-protecting really well right now. Obviously, we’d like to get more out of the run game, but, you know, I know we’ll make it work.”

Joe Burrow Changes Stance on Bengals Run Game

After spending time digesting the game film, during his Wednesday press conference, Burrow clarified his comments, “I might have been a little emotional after the game. Obviously, you want to have balance as an offense, and the run game wasn’t good enough on Sunday… but yeah, we got to be more balanced going forward, and a big part of that is the running game.”

No matter how head coach Taylor calls the plays, whether he goes for passes or runs to balance things out, Burrow says, “I feel confident in myself that you put it in my hands, and I’m going to make it work.” When a reporter asked if the team needed to run more, he said, “Because I know we’re great at it. Because I know that’s what I do best, and we’re really pass-protecting really well right now.”

Those 23 total rushing yards were the lowest in any of Burrow’s 81 career starts. Before this game, his previous low was 40 rushing yards against the Baltimore Ravens in his rookie season.

For the Week 5 game against the winless Miami Dolphins, the Bengals have to find a way to make things work for the quarterback and get the offense back on track.
