‘Certified Weirdo,’ ‘This Won’t Age Well’ — WNBA World Reacts As Sophie Cunningham Takes a Shot at A’ja Wilson After Fever Fan Controversy
· Yahoo Sports
Sophie Cunningham and the Indiana Fever picked up a crucial 99-89 victory over the Las Vegas Aces on Tuesday night to stay alive in the WNBA playoffs. The deciding game of the series will be played Thursday night in Las Vegas.
Yet the main storyline from the contest involves Aces star and perennial WNBA MVP candidate A’ja Wilson. She got into an altercation with a Fever fan sitting courtside who appeared to point at her and say something that clearly got her riled up.

The reaction has been mixed, with some defending Wilson and others saying she overreacted due to frustration. Cunningham decided to get in on the discussion, adding more fuel to the controversy.

On Wednesday, Cunningham posted a video in which she said: “Not trying to be dramatic at all, like seriously. I was just here having my morning coffee and what a [expletive] comeback year for the point. Who would have ever thought, just who would have ever thought.”
Of course, Cunningham was referencing her viral point from earlier in the season that became a meme online.
This was not taken well by some fans, though.
“Now, if A’Ja and the Aces knock them out the playoffs, this will get revisited and won’t age well,” one fan wrote.
Another fan cautioned Cunningham about stirring up drama before a deciding Game 3.
“It was an overreaction, but this is a [expletive] move by Sophie,” the user wrote. “You’re going into an elimination game, and they have the best player in the W. Not the wisest idea to poke the bear.”
However, some fans took it far more lightly than those who decided to rip the Fever veteran.
“Y’all are crying over a point,” a fan wrote. “And she’s the weirdo?”
Another echoed a similar sentiment.
“She’s the weirdo?” the fan began. “Y’all are mad at getting pointed at lol.”
It’s clear both Fever and Aces fans are chiming in on Cunningham poking fun at Wilson. This only sets up an even more heated Game 3 between the two teams, with the winner advancing to the semifinals.
Game 2 saw Cunningham finish with only 4 points, while Wilson had 22 points in a losing effort. The Fever were instead led by the trio of Caitlin Clark, Aliyah Boston, and Kelsey Mitchell.
Fans will now be eager to see if Wilson responds, or if she lets her play on the court speak for her.
