Giants' Dennard Wilson on pass rush: 'Maybe the dam breaks this week'

Dennard Wilson says the New York Giants' sack production is not where it needs to be, and he put that on the coaching staff.

Abdul Carter and Kayvon Thibodeaux have not generated the totals the defense expected through three games. With Brian Burns out, Wilson said the staff has to put the remaining rushers in better positions rather than asking them to win the same way every snap.

“Right now, obviously, the production hasn’t been there with the sack totals and everything like that, and we take full responsibility as a coaching staff to get that going,” Wilson told reporters on Thursday. “A lot of it is moving pieces around, trying to get different players in different spots so they can have more success, being able to dent the pocket in the A and B gaps.”

Wilson added that the Giants can also bring extra pressure during games to manufacture some of that production, and that the front has to stay in sync whether the bigger players or the faster ones are on the field. The other fix he named was a better initial get-off, enough to get the quarterback on his heels before the ball comes out.

Against Tennessee, Wilson said, the Giants did pressure on the first three or four third downs. The ball still left quickly, which he also saw from Dak Prescott in the opener and from the Los Angeles Rams in Week 2.

Wilson did not describe the early results as a collapse. Tennessee scored seven points. The Giants forced six three-and-outs on the first possessions and held the Titans to 54 yards in the first half.

“It’s there. It’s going to come. Be patient,” he said. “And when it comes, it just keeps coming. And maybe the dam breaks this week. You don’t know.”

Jihad Ward is one of the pieces Wilson can move. He coached Ward in Tennessee, where he said Ward played extremely well, lined up inside and outside, and had 5.0 sacks. Wilson said Ward can rush from the edge, play in the middle, or work as an interior rusher, and that he plays with tenacity.

“Haddy’s going to be ready when his number is called,” Wilson said. “He’s an ultimate professional. And he’s been in camp. He’s in shape. So, we’ll see how the chips fall. But Haddy can be a good factor for us on our defense.”

Wilson said Ward already knows the expectation. How many snaps he takes Sunday, and in the weeks after, is still to be determined.
