Antonelli warns fans not to expect another Monza miracle in Baku: 'It's harder to overtake here'

Kimi Antonelli has warned that his Azerbaijan Grand Prix recovery from 16th on the grid will be significantly harder than his famous drive from P19 to victory at Monza, saying the Baku street circuit presents a much tougher overtaking challenge ahead of today's race.

The championship leader outlined a straightforward approach. "A good start, stay out of trouble, and then try to set a really good pace," Antonelli said. Despite the low starting position, the 20-year-old insisted he will hold nothing back: "To be fair, flat out. I have nothing to lose, and I just need to do the best race I can."
Obviously, it's going to be a bit harder than Monza because it's a bit harder to overtake here, but I believe we can still do a good race.
Mercedes deputy principal Bradley Lord said the team expects strong damage limitation, even if a repeat of Antonelli's Monza victory is unlikely. Lord stressed the importance of "letting it come to him" and making use of the car's pace to progress through the field. Antonelli himself conceded Russell has had the upper hand, saying: "George has been doing an incredible job this weekend."
No Baku winner has ever started lower than tenth
History works firmly against a fairy-tale result. According to Grande Premio's pre-race analysis, no driver has ever won a Formula 1 race in Baku from lower than tenth on the grid, a record Daniel Ricciardo established in 2017.
The closest comparable recovery came from Lando Norris, who advanced from 15th to fourth in 2024 using a long opening stint and late tyre advantage. Norris started on the hard tyre, made his way through the field and pitted late, a strategy that could serve as a template for Antonelli's approach today. A victory from P16 would establish a new circuit record.
A hard start and safety car timing could prove decisive
Pirelli expects a one-stop race on Baku's smooth, low-abrasion asphalt, with the C3 Hard, C4 Medium and C5 Soft compounds available. Antonelli posted the fastest lap of FP1 on the hard C3 compound before a hydraulic issue ended his session early.
A long hard opening stint is one conventional strategy option from P16, but the Medium and Soft both have plenty of range at Baku, so the Hard's extra life counts for less than it might elsewhere.
Pirelli's own data puts the safety car probability at 89 per cent this weekend, meaning any intervention could prove more decisive than compound choice.
Antonelli still leads the championship by an impressive 81 points, which means even a modest recovery today keeps the title firmly in his hands. Russell, who delivered a dominant pole as GPblog reported yesterday, has his clearest opportunity in weeks to close the gap.
