Padres Bounce Back, Beat Dodgers As Shohei Ohtani Returns

The San Diego Padres got off to a rough start in the series against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday night with a 7-0 blowout loss in LA.

Padres ace Michael King got beat up as Craig Stammen moved him up a bit in order to keep him ready for a potential finale with playoff implications in store.
On Wednesday, the Padres trotted out former San Francisco Giants lefty Robbie Ray, and the veteran struggled a bit. Dodgers star Yoshinobu Yamamoto went six innings, allowing four runs, but only two earned, and giving up five hits in another strong outing.
Prior to the game, Shohei Ohtani was activated from the IL, but the Padres managed to get the win, 5-1.
Ray went just 3.1 innings, allowing one run on seven hits, and David Morgan bailed him out as just one run came in during the bottom of the fourth inning despite Ray loading the bases on a trio of singles.
Thankfully, Ray was working with a two-run lead going into the fourth inning after Manny Machado hit a home run to straightaway center field to throw some life into the Padres dugout.

The Padres then added a pair of runs in the top of the fifth. Machado had a sacrifice fly, driving in Fernando Tatis Jr., and Dustin Harris drove in a run on a fielder's choice as Ethan Salas scored.
Things remained at 4-1 until Freddy Fermin hit an RBI single in the top of the ninth, driving in Samad Taylor to give the Padres a four-lead going into the bottom of the ninth.
The Padres had already used David Morgan, Yuki Matsui, Bradgley Rodriguez and Adrian Morejon, and that bullpen group combined to allow just three runs and three walks in 4.2 innings.
Then came in superstar closer Mason Miller. He had to face Mookie Betts, Shohei Ohtani and Will Smith, but he got Betts and Ohtani to strike out swinging.
Will Smith walked to give the Dodgers some hope, but Freddie Freeman lined out to give the Padres the win.
The Arizona Diamondbacks also won on Wednesday, and the Philadelphia Phillies and Chicago Cubs both lost, making the NL Wild Card race very interesting.
The Padres-Dodgers series concludes on Thursday night. Nick Pivetta (3-2, 3.30 ERA) takes the mound for San Diego as Tyler Glasnow (5-1, 3.46 ERA) pitches for the Dodgers.
The Cubs face the Marlins and the Phillies take on the Brewers on Thursday.
