There was plenty of discussion surrounding Lane Kiffin’s return to Oxford, Mississippi, as the LSU head coach prepared to face his former team, the Ole Miss Rebels.

Sadly for Kiffin, the Tigers fell behind 24-7 in the first half and couldn’t complete their second-half comeback, ultimately suffering a 32-24 defeat in their first loss of the season.
The result quickly drew a pointed jab from 2019 LSU national champion Breiden Fehoko.
Breiden Fehoko Blasts Lane Kiffin and Sam Leavitt After LSU’s Crushing Loss
When LSU faced Ole Miss, Kiffin became the second head coach in AP Poll history to have a Top-10 game against a team he coached the previous season.
Much of the pregame discussion centered on whether Kiffin could elevate LSU with its $40 million-plus roster after leaving Oxford.
There were also questions about whether Ole Miss could maintain its success without Kiffin. Pete Golding and the Rebels answered those questions emphatically on Saturday night with an eight-point victory.
Kiffin is now 1-18 all-time when trailing by at least 10 points against a ranked opponent. His only comeback win in that situation came in 2023, when Ole Miss overcame a 17-7 deficit against No. 24 Tulane to win 37-20.

Following the loss, Fehoko decided to unleash a blunt message on social media at Kiffin and the Tigers.
“They are playing ‘Calling Baton Rouge’ in Oxford, Mississippi. This [expletive] is so embarrassing,” Fehoko tweeted.
The contrast between the two quarterbacks was notable, as Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss completed 33 of 48 passes for 363 yards, two touchdowns and one interception while posting a 141.86 passer rating. Chambliss finished last season with a 90.3 PFN College Quarterback Impact score, ranking No. 5 in the nation.
Meanwhile, LSU QB Sam Leavitt finished Saturday’s game with 16-of-27 for 158 yards, one touchdown and one interception with a 113.23 passer rating.
Fehoko had strong words for Leavitt following the loss.
“I don’t ever wanna see Sam Leavitt take another snap for LSU again. There’s no way a $40 million roster should be in a 24-7 deficit to Ole Miss,” Fehoko wrote. “Landen Clark needs to be playing. Leave that dumb [expletive] basketball hoop in Oxford. Just focus on football.”
Though Kiffin ultimately lost to the program he helped build, the matchup carried plenty of emotion for him.

As the Tigers’ buses arrived at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium, Kiffin acknowledged feeling a strong wave of emotion and gratitude stemming from his six seasons in Oxford.
“It was really emotional driving in on the bus for a lot of reasons,” Kiffin said.
“And I’m not just saying this because I lost. I would have said this anyway, since you asked. It was really a lot of emotions of gratefulness for this place and for the six years that went well beyond football.”
The Tigers will now look to bounce back when they play Texas A&M on Sept. 26.
