Beyond registering a Super Bowl victory for the Indianapolis Colts, he single-handedly elevated the NFL’s most important position to new heights via his accuracy and excellent football IQ. Besides a Super Bowl triumph, Manning won four MVPs with Indianapolis, establishing himself as the best player in the team’s history. However, there was a time when Manning wasn’t sure about whether the Colts would draft him. He’s now recounted this story to encourage players and up-and-coming talents in the league.

Unlike most youngsters of his age, Manning was bold enough about his skills to threaten the Colts should they fail to draft him. A recent report from NFL insider Josh Chambers has Manning recollecting his early penchant for the Colts.

“I really wanted to go to the Colts…I’m like, ‘I think this place has got a chance to kind of get it going.’ The Colts just said, ‘Hey, we don’t know. We’re not going to tell you up until the day of the draft.’”
“So I went and visited them about three weeks before the draft. I just kind of said, hey, listen. I want to come here.’ ‘I really think there’s a good thing going here.’ But I’m just not into playing a lot of games. If you’re not going to take me, I’d just like to know that in advance.”
“But if you do take me, I promise you we’ll win. If you don’t take me, I will kick your ass for the next 15 years…

The 1997 SEC Player of the Year was in a battle with Washington State’s Ryan Leaf for the top slot. While Manning was the more accomplished college quarterback, Leaf boasted a more dynamic profile and carried a stronger arm. Aware that the Colts were considering Leaf, Peyton felt the way out of the situation was to threaten the front office.

Meanwhile, Manning preferred the Colts because of their proximity to Knoxville. He also liked the franchise because it had a promising young receiver in Marvin Harrison. Eventually, Polian heeded his push, giving the New Orleans native a chance to etch his name in franchise history.

Manning changed the way that quarterbacks approached the game, acting as another offensive coordinator on the field. His pre-snap reads and ability to make audibles on the fly left defenses fighting to catch up with his skills.

Ultimately, Peyton would attain the Hall of Fame status alongside Harrison to become one of the most prolific quarterback and wide receiver duos in NFL history.
