NFL analyst reveals subtle trait that makes Lamar Jackson special

Lamar Jackson’s athletic ability demands so much attention that some of the more refined elements of his game can be overlooked. The Athletic's Ted Nguyen identified one of those details while reviewing Jackson’s performance during the Ravens’ 41-23 victory over the Indianapolis Colts.

Nguyen highlighted a subtle pump fake from Jackson, explaining that he did not notice it while watching the game live. The moment demonstrated the patience and poise that continue to separate Jackson from other quarterbacks, despite critics and pundits who question his elite skill traits. The pump fake appeared insignificant in real time, but it helped Jackson manipulate the coverage before delivering an accurate throw. Instead of immediately attacking the first available window, Jackson stayed balanced under all-out pressure, letting the play develop and using his eyes and upper body to influence the defense.

That type of patience is especially valuable for a quarterback whose running ability forces defenders to make quick decisions. Linebackers and defensive backs must account for Jackson leaving the pocket, creating additional opportunities for him to move coverage without taking a step.

Jackson’s Week 1 production reflected that control.

The two-time NFL MVP completed 17 of 25 passes for 324 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions. He averaged 13 yards per attempt, posted a 124.2 passer rating and finished with an 82.8 QBR. Jackson also rushed seven times for 40 yards and a touchdown. His 16-yard scramble on third-and-16 extended Baltimore’s second touchdown drive and showed his athletic ability remains available when the play breaks down.

The most encouraging aspect of the performance was how Jackson blended those physical gifts with patience inside Declan Doyle’s offense. He attacked Indianapolis from the pocket, worked from under center, generated explosive completions and avoided forcing the football into coverage.

Baltimore finished with 506 total yards, including 324 through the air and 202 on the ground. The Ravens scored touchdowns on four of their first five possessions, with a holding penalty wiping away another potential score.

Jackson’s performance also strengthened his position in the early MVP race. DraftKings listed Jackson at +650 after Week 1, trailing only Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen at +475. Caleb Williams followed at +700, with Joe Burrow at +900. It is far too early for one performance to determine an MVP race. Still, Jackson already owns two of those awards because his game extends beyond spectacular runs and improvisational highlights.

The pump fake Nguyen identified offered a small example of Jackson’s continued evolution. His speed can punish a defense after a play breaks down. His patience, accuracy, and ability to manipulate coverage can prevent the play from breaking down in the first place.
