Strong passing game can lead Illinois to victory

In just his first game, Katin Houser proved why he was a top priority for Illinois this offseason. 

After posting the highest QBR in the nation and producing highlights like the Hail Mary before halftime against UAB, Houser and the passing game will be perhaps the biggest component of Illinois’ success this season.

Because of this, this weekend’s game against Duke will require offensive coordinator Barry Lunney Jr. to take the training wheels off, so to speak. Last week against UAB, Illinois rushed 26 times and passed just 17 times.

Although the opponent is tougher, Houser taking over as the key contributor to this offense should be easier than it was in Week 1.

Now more familiar with the wide receiver group after getting actual game experience with them, the weapons on this offense are starting to stick out. 

Collin Dixon led all Illini receivers with six receptions for 70 yards and 2 touchdowns, but other capable options will have to insert themselves as dependable contributors. 

The most likely candidate for this is Hudson Clement, who had a very mundane opening night with three receptions for 26 yards. 

As the number two wide receiver option, greater production will be needed out of him to really stimulate the productiveness of the offense. 

Likewise, Brayden Trimble will have to play above his role. Coming into the year as the likely fourth receiver option, he has quickly found himself in the mix as the second-best receiving option on the roster.

Despite playing in just his first collegiate game in week one, Trimble will have to be more involved to give the Illini multiple threats and variation to their offense. 

Finally, tight ends may need to get more involved in receiving roles. 

The Illinois offense has done well with tight ends as receivers, with Tanner Arkin and Cole Rusk as examples. Working them into the receiving game adds an extra layer of depth to the offense and adds some positive volatility.

This weekend’s game provides a great opportunity for the Illini to see what their offense is truly capable of.
