‘Lost His Patience’ — NFL Analyst Weighs In on What Went Wrong With Drake Mayes Game That Led to Seahawks Loss

Seahawks starting quarterback Sam Darnold suffered an injury, but the franchise still picked off Maye three times in the fourth quarter to secure a 13–10 win in front of a sellout home crowd that had a lot to celebrate Wednesday night.

 Chris Canty Blasts Drake Maye’s Costly Mistakes

During Thursday’s episode of ESPN Radio’s “Unsportsmanlike,” former NFL defensive lineman Chris Canty explained what changed for Maye late in the game and said:

“You never want to be mentioned with Jameis Winston in terms of how you play in the fourth quarter, with multiple interceptions and multiple sacks. Not a good thing for Drake Maye. And that last interception, you just wish that he would play on schedule. I can understand taking a shot, but throwing the ball late into the end zone the way that he did, he gave Josh Jobe an opportunity to get some get-back for the DPI that he had earlier in the game that led to the first touchdown for New England.”

He also added:

“I just wish that Drake had made a different decision. Throw the football away and live to fight another day. In the worst-case scenario, take the points, kick the field goal and play for overtime. Extending the game is not a bad way to go when the other team’s starting quarterback is out. So, the more football you play, in theory, the better chance you have of winning. And it feels like Drake Maye lost his patience, admittedly so, in the postgame press conference, and those types of mistakes will come back to bite you.”

Maye was able to remain calm during the first three quarters, helping the Patriots carry a 10–3 advantage into the final period. The game flipped when Maye came under pressure, as Seattle forced him to throw three interceptions in the fourth quarter, turning a controlled performance into a painful defeat.

The game was turned upside down when Maye lost patience and tried to make a difficult throw into the end zone.

Maye’s decision proved costly because New England was already within kicker Andy Borregales’ range. Borregales had made a 50-yard field goal earlier, so the Patriots could have played for overtime instead of forcing a risky pass.

Josh Jobe intercepted the underthrown throw in the end zone with 21 seconds remaining, sealing Seattle’s comeback. The loss gave Maye an immediate lesson: against a defense as aggressive as Seattle’s, patience and ball security can be just as important as making explosive plays.
