The Cowboys suddenly look like they may be limping into MetLife Stadium at less than full strength at a key position, with the team perhaps needing to scramble for adequate depth.

Fifth-year running back Malik Davis suffered an injury in Friday's work session at The Star, just days before the team's season opener against the New York Giants. According to Clarence Hill Jr. of DLLS, who cited a source, Davis was carted off during practice. While the severity of the injury was not immediately known, Hill notes that the 27-year-old's prognosis for Sunday night's game "doesn't look good ... at the moment."
Nick Harris of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram specified a hip injury, calling Davis's Week 1 status "in serious doubt."
Originally an undrafted free agent out of Florida in 2022, Davis put on a strong training camp and preseason, winning the RB2 job behind starter Javonte Williams and prompting the Cowboys to cut ties with 2025 draft picks Jaydon Blue and Phil Mafah. That promotion to primary backup came after a career year for Davis, in which he logged 250 rushing yards and a pair of touchdowns on 52 carries.

Davis was finally getting his opportunity.
Dallas signed Emari Demercado as depth less than two weeks ago. Apart from fullback Hunter Luepke, the only other running back in the building is Israel Abanikanda, who is serving on the practice squad.
Davis also plays a key role on special teams; his snaps in that phase of the game would also have to be farmed out to a teammate.
If Davis's injury is determined to be serious, the Cowboys may even look to reacquire Blue, their former fifth-round draft choice who is currently on Philadelphia's practice squad, or Mafah, the seventh-rounder who is still available on the open market.
Williams will remain the bellcow back, looking to build on his first 1,000-yard season, but things behind him just got disturbingly thin.
