As of Friday afternoon, the Orioles are three games behind the Cleveland Guardians for the third and final AL Wild Card spot. 

Would the Orioles even be in the playoff conversation if it weren't for first baseman Pete Alonso? 

Alonso signed a five-year, $155 million deal with the Orioles after a stellar seven-year run with the New York Mets. 

He continues to put up stellar offensive numbers, leading Bleacher Report's Zachary D. Rymer to name him Baltimore's MVP of the season. 

"Not much doubt about this one, right? In his first season as an Oriole, Alonso leads his new team with 34 home runs and an .861 OPS, plus the entire American League with 97 runs batted in," Rymer wrote. 

Alonso doesn't only hit homers in low-leverage moments. This season, he's near the top of the Major League leaderboard for long balls with runners on base. 

"His favorite trick has long been hitting home runs with men on, and that has continued in 2026. His 20 homers with the bases occupied are tied with Kyle Schwarber for the most in MLB," Rymer added.

Alonso turns 32 in December, but it doesn't appear a rapid decline is on the horizon anytime soon. 

This year marks the seventh time he's hit 34 homers or more in his eight big league seasons. 

The Orioles hope his continued excellence will help them sneak into the playoffs and make a deep run.
