Nick Marsh impresses in Indiana football debut with one-handed touchdown catch: 'He made me right'

BLOOMINGTON — Josh Hoover connected with Charlie Becker for two of his four touchdown passes Saturday, but it was another Indiana receiver who delivered perhaps the 52-16 win’s most impressive moment.
Hoover’s first score as a Hoosier actually went to fellow transfer Nick Marsh, whose highlight-reel reputation at Michigan State followed him to IU.

Facing single coverage in the slot from 15 yards out on the Hoosiers’ first offensive possession, Marsh kept his defender to his inside before turning his body and grabbing Hoover’s low-slung pass with his right hand. Officials ruled the pass incomplete initially, but a video review showed Marsh kept the ball pinned to his body as he rolled to the endzone turf, eventually confirming Marsh’s first touchdown catch with his new school.
His quarterback appreciated the effort, as Hoover acknowledged his role in the level of difficulty of one of the best catches Week 1 delivered across college football.
“All I was trying to do was just give those guys chances, and they made plays,” Hoover said. “The ball to Nick wasn’t even probably the best throw I could’ve made in that situation, and he made me right. It was a great catch by him.”
Marsh made just one more catch on the afternoon, finishing with 17 yards receiving. But he impressed as well with his downfield blocking — an important skill for a Curt Cignetti wide receiver — and Marsh was part of an overall effort that saw Indiana pass for 231 yards and four scores, settling Hoover into his new job across the course the win over North Texas.
