Giants cut 2 players symbolizing draft failures and organizational shift

There was no improvement for two players hoping for second chances under a new coaching regime.
The New York Giants released offensive lineman Evan Neal and wide receiver Jalin Hyatt on Sunday as part of their roster cuts to reach the NFL’s 53-man limit.

While neither cut was surprising given how the preseason played out, both players were significant investments during general manager Joe Schoen’s first two drafts.
The moves give further evidence to what may be a philosophical shift of decision making since the Giants brought in coach John Harbaugh.
With Sunday’s cuts, the Giants have just four of their 18 picks still on the roster from Schoen’s first two drafts. The list includes: defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux, linebacker Micah McFadden, cornerback Deonte Banks and center John Michael Schmitz.
Neal, 25, was selected seventh overall in the 2022 NFL Draft out of Alabama and arrived in New York with expectations of becoming the team’s long-term answer at right tackle. Instead, injuries and inconsistency defined much of his tenure.
Neal started 27 games for the Giants during his career but struggled to lock down a permanent role along the offensive line. After the Giants declined his fifth-year option earlier this year, Neal returned to the team on a veteran’s minimum deal and never made much of a push up the depth chart in training camp.
Meanwhile, Hyatt’s bid for a roster spot was further complicated by a lower-leg injury that sidelined him during most of training camp, but the former third-round pick ultimately failed to carve out a consistent role after recording 36 catches for 470 yards and no touchdowns in three seasons with the Giants.
In other news Sunday, wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. was one of the players on the right side of the roster.
Barring injury, the once-promising NFL showman will be on the field when the Giants open their season Sept. 13 against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday Night Football.
