Mumbai: McDonald’s Colaba Outlet Faces FDA Action Over Pest Infestation, Hygiene Lapses; Food Business Licence Suspended

Mumbai: The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Friday suspended the food business licence of a McDonald’s outlet in Colaba, Mumbai, following an inspection that found serious food safety and hygiene violations, including pest infestation, poor temperature control, cockroaches and inadequate staff hygiene.
According to an NDTV report, the action was taken against Hardcastle Restaurants Pvt. Ltd., which operates the McDonald’s Family Restaurant kiosk at Metro House, Ground Floor, Shahid Bhagat Singh Road, Colaba. The outlet’s FSSAI licence, bearing number 11518001000315, was suspended with effect from August 19, 2026.

Cockroaches found on premises
During the inspection, FDA officials reportedly found cockroaches on the premises, along with rotting food waste on the kitchen floor near food storage and preparation areas.
The FDA also flagged violations of hygiene protocols, stating that staff members were observed touching dirty footwear and soiled cleaning cloths before handling ready-to-eat food without washing their hands.

According to an FDA official, the outlet had submitted a 148-page compliance report on August 12, claiming that all identified deficiencies had been rectified. However, a subsequent inspection found that most of the issues remained unresolved.
The FDA said that submitting false information to the licensing authority amounts to an offence under Section 61 of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
Following the food safety violations, including pest infestation, hygiene violations, cold-storage concerns and alleged submission of false compliance information, the FDA said that granting additional time for corrective action will not be considered.
Food business licence suspended
Therefore, the licence has been suspended under Section 32(2) of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, read with Regulation 2.1.8(1) of the Food Safety and Standards Regulations, 2011.
The outlet has been directed to cease all activities involving the manufacturing, sale or distribution of food during the suspension period. The FDA has even warned that any violation could lead to prosecution for operating without a valid licence, while surveillance of the premises will continue.
