As ever, the South African Social Security Agency increased Old-Age Grants by R80 back in April 2026, and they will pay the following next month:

  • SASSA Old-Age Grants 60 to 74 years old – R2 400 (up from R2 320)
  • SASSA Old-Age Grants 75 years and older – R2 420 (up from R2 340)

What is encouraging is that September 2026 SASSA Old-Age Grants will be the last before the usual mid-year increase in October 2026. The Department of Social Development (DSD), under new ministerial control of Dina Pule, is yet to confirm how much increases will be. HOW MUCH COULD GRANTS INCREASE BY?

As part of September 2026 SASSA Old-Age Grants, the agency is forging ahead with its strict review policy. As last count, it was targeting more than 300 000 suspect profiles and said it’s saved more than R170 million already thanks to this process. However, the DSD also revealed in parliament earlier this year that it had underspent its budget on social grants by R4.8 billion for the financial year 2025/26.

That makes what the agency is fighting to save each year look like a drop in a vast ocean. Simple calculations reveal that split across all four-million Old-Age Grant recipients, SASSA could increase grants by R100 per month for a full year and not need any more budget. STRICTER REVIEWS FOR SEPTEMBER 2026 SASSA OLD-AGE GRANTS

SASSA can cross-reference all your personal data with a host of other government departments and banks. Therefore, anyone who has been claiming a government grant that shouldn’t be will be found out. Worse still, if you are caught misrepresenting your means, not only will you lose your grant, but you will have to pay back the money with interest.

For those who are reviewed by SASSA and clear their names, they receive a deferred payment on a fourth date. Next month this looks likely to fall on Saturday 5 September 2026 (TBC). However, if you cannot clear your name, you face the option of two different payment plans: One is the lump-sum payback, which is most affordable. But the vast majority end up paying back their ill-gotten SASSA money on a layaway plan, incurring high interest rate penalties in the process.

ADJUSTED MEANS (INCOME) TESTS

To make things tougher, the agency has also increased the income (means) and asset eligibility for September 2026 SASSA Old-Age Grants:

  • Your income must be less than R9 350 (single) or R18 700 (married) per month.
  • This adds up to R112 200 (single) or R224 400 (married) per year.
  • Total assets (property) in your name cannot be worth more than R1 584 000 (single) or R3 168 000 (married).

Here’s what you need to know and be able to show the agency when applying for September 2026 SASSA Old-Age Grants:

  • Official RSA identity document (ID) preferably a Smart ID Card with digital ID photo.
  • Valid three months’ statement certified by your bank, plus copies.
  • All documents proving your marital status, plus death certificates if necessary.
  • Proof of residence (a utility bill with your name on it, not older than three months).
  • Documents proving your income and/or any financial dividends (very important).
  • Comprehensive information regarding assets/valuation of any property you own.
  • Full declaration of any and all private pension in your name.
  • Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) membership book, or discharge certificate from your previous job.
  • A copy of your will, first and final liquidation and distribution accounts, if your spouse has passed away in the last five years.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO BE APPROVED FOR SASSA OLD-AGE GRANTS?

September 2026 SASSA Old-Age Grants typically take around three months to be processed, so, you will receive your first payment in December. However, you will be back paid to the date of your first application, so, three months in the first tranche. But that’s assuming you have all your documents correct at the first time of asking.
