The Boston Red Sox are on the hunt for more infield help as the 2026 MLB trade deadline approaches. They've had their eyes on a ton of different options, but there are a few that are more appealing than the rest.

While there has been a link to some second baseman this summer, the real need for the Red Sox comes at shortstop. Trevor Story isn't someone the Red Sox can trust, so adding a top-tier shortstop via trade would make sense.

One of their top targets is the Los Angeles Angels' 25-year-old star, Zach Neto. Two days until the trade deadline, ESPN's Jeff Passan and Kiley McDaniel shared the updated odds of the Angels trading Neto, and for the Red Sox, they aren't too bad.

"Zach Neto, SS, Los Angeles Angels. Chance of being traded: 40%," Passan and McDaniel write. "... Best fits: Red Sox, Braves, Blue Jays, Twins, Yankees."

While this 40% trade projection from Passan and McDaniel doesn't mean there's a 40% chance the Red Sox acquire the young infielder, it does mean that those are the odds the Angels actually trade him.

There's less than a coin-flip odds of Neto being traded, but a 40% chance that Neto is dealt is still a bit higher than some of the other trade targets around baseball.

Mason Miller is at 20%, and Jeremy Pena, the Houston Astros shortstop the Red Sox have been linked to this year, has just a 25% chance of being traded.

Neto, the 25-year-old shortstop who is under club control through the 2029 season and has a .232 batting average with 19 home runs and 2.7 bWAR this season across 422 at-bats, would be one of the best options for Boston amid their infield need.

The Red Sox still would have to compete with some of the other teams around baseball, with the Atlanta Braves and New York Yankees being two clubs that could also pursue Neto this summer.

But, if nothing else, hearing that there is a 40% chance that the Angels trade Neto should open the door for the Red Sox to have a fighting chance to land maybe the best possible shortstop upgrade they could have this summer.
