The king of Spain was in attendance to watch Spain defeat reigning champion Argentina 1-0 in extra time on Sunday, July 19 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
King Felipe VI watched the match from a suite with his wife, Queen Letizia and their daughters Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofía. The royal family sat with President Donald Trump and FIFA president Gianni Infantino.
In the match, Ferran Torres scored the winning goal in the 106th minute. Argentina and Lionel Messi did not have a shot on goal in the entire match.

King Felipe VI, who stands at 6-5, then joined Trump and Infantino on the pitch to hand out medals to Torres and the rest of the Spain team. The king gave Rodri a hug when he won the Golden Ball. Rising star Lamine Yamal, who made his World Cup debut in this tournament, handed the World Cup trophy to the dignitary so he could have a moment of glory.
The king also attended the group match against Uruguay in Guadalajara and has a sporting background himself. He was part of his country's sailing team in the 1992 Olympics, which were held in Barcelona.
La Roja is the first team to hold both the men's and women's World Cup title. The women's team won the 2023 competition. This is the men's second World Cup win after taking the trophy in 2010.
