One of the best players to come out of the Alabama Crimson Tide’s defensive backfield is finally getting the recognition he deserves ahead of pivotal year three with the New Orleans Saints.

Former Alabama Crimson Tide cornerback Kool-Aid McKinstry is The Athletic’s breakout candidate for the New Orleans Saints ahead of the 2026 NFL season. The second-round pick from the 2024 NFL Draft has been relatively quiet through his first two professional seasons, but the Saints are banking on a year 3 leap from the former five-star recruit who dominated in Tuscaloosa.

Kool-Aid McKinstry 2025 stats

With the New Orleans Saints

  • 59 solo tackles.
  • 3 interceptions.
  • 17 pass breakups.

Why the Saints need McKinstry to break out

The truth is, New Orleans has cleared the deck at cornerback. The Saints moved on from Paulson Adebo, Marshon Lattimore, and just about everyone else who could have competed for a starting role. That leaves McKinstry as the clear No. 1 corner, and as The Athletic pointed out, the organization trusts him to fill that role.

That’s a significant vote of confidence for a player who hasn’t generated much buzz since arriving in the league. McKinstry was a second-round selection, and expectations were high after a stellar college career that earned praise from Nick Saban himself. But the production hasn’t matched the pedigree yet in New Orleans.

McKinstry’s skill set translates to a starting role

So the question becomes whether McKinstry can replicate what made him special at Alabama. I believe he can, and here’s why.

McKinstry was a press man corner for the Crimson Tide. He burst onto the scene as a true freshman and never looked back. He may not have elite speed or top-tier measurables, but his physicality at the line of scrimmage set him apart. He gets in receivers’ faces, imposes his will, and makes life miserable for opposing pass catchers trying to create separation.

That style of play translates well to the NFL, especially for a corner who now has two years of professional experience under his belt. The learning curve for defensive backs in the league is steep, and plenty of talented corners take until their third season to put it all together.

A year 3 breakout feels overdue

McKinstry has shown flashes of starting-caliber play during his time with the Saints. The talent was never the question. It was about opportunity and development. With the roster turnover New Orleans has undergone at the position, McKinstry now has the runway to establish himself as a legitimate No. 1 corner.

The way I see it, this is one of the better breakout picks The Athletic could have made. McKinstry’s college tape showed a player who thrived when given a defined role, and now he has that in the NFL. A year 3 breakout similar to what he showed in Tuscaloosa feels like a reasonable expectation for a player with his tools and mentality.
