Lukas Podolski calls Germany loss to Ecuador a ‘reality check’

Germany may have secured a ticket to the knockouts by topping their group at the 2026 World Cup, but it is far from quiet as the 2-1 defeat to Ecuador a few days ago instigated a fresh wave of criticism lobbied against the national team. Lukas Podolski, who won the World Cup with Germany in 2014, said that the loss will hopefully knock sense into the team.

“Maybe a loss like this is good sometimes. Getting knocked down a peg. So that everyone says: Now let’s calm down. Maybe a loss like this is good so that everyone can go back to their little room and reflect,” Podolski said (as captured by Sky Sports Germany). Die Mannschaft advanced to the knockout stage of the World Cup on the third try after getting grouped in 2018 and 2022.
