The Milwaukee Bucks finally traded Giannis Antetokounmpo, a 10-time All-Star and two-time NBA MVP, to the Miami Heat late Monday night. Chris Haynes was first to report the news.

ESPN’s Shams Charania reported the full terms of the trade: The Heat receive Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis, while the Bucks receive Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis, three first-round draft picks, including No. 13 overall this year, and more draft compensation.

“The Heat are sending to Milwaukee unprotected first-rounders in 2031 and 2033 along with No. 13, a pick swap in 2030 and a 2033 second-rounder, according to sources,” Charania wrote. “The trade does not include any additional teams — it is a one-to-one move, sources said — but both the Heat and Bucks will execute the deal on July 6, which leaves the framework open to see if there are opportunities to expand.”

The Boston Celtics were the only other team in the Antetokounmpo sweepstakes, and it’s fascinating that Antetokounmpo purportedly chose Miami.

Antetokounmpo, an all-time great talent, has not played meaningful basketball since leading the Bucks to their first NBA title in 50 years by beating the Phoenix Suns in the 2021 NBA Finals. Since the 2022-23 season, Milwaukee suffered three consecutive first-round exits before missing the playoffs entirely this season.

Given “Heat Culture,” Antetokounmpo could immediately make Miami a contender in the Eastern Conference, the weaker of the two conferences. That is obviously on the board. The New York Knicks just proved that preseason predictions are useless. But gut reaction in the moment? I would have loved to have seen Antetokounmpo join a Celtics team that has reached two Finals in the past five years, including a championship in 2024, and be all but guaranteed to play meaningful basketball again next season.

As it is, assuming this trade goes through, Antetokounmpo will have the opportunity to restore the Heat as a power rather than bandwagon onto a ready-made situation in Boston. But beyond that, he will have much to provide individually.

Antetokounmpo is coming off the worst season of his decorated 13-year NBA career. Calf and knee injuries limited him to a career-low 36 games. But when he did play, he still averaged 27.6 points, 9.8 rebounds, and 5.4 assists.
