From Holly Springs fields to Stanley Cup Final: Hurricanes coach driven by purpose, routine

Long before the Stanley Cup Final, Bill Burniston had a vision.
"I don't know how I'm going to do it," he recalled telling his wife back in 2007. "But I'll work for two organizations -- USA Baseball and the Carolina Hurricanes. We'll figure it out."

Years later, he did just that.
Burniston, now the strength and conditioning coach for the Carolina Hurricanes, turned that goal into reality in 2015. But those who know him say that's no surprise.
He's the kind of person who sees something first, and then makes it happen.
I first met Burniston through Holly Springs baseball, where we even coached together for a year. That same determination showed up back then, and it's still at the core of who he is today.
As the Hurricanes push through their Stanley Cup run, Burniston and his staff are focused on one thing: consistency.
"We always talk about just winning the day," Burniston said. "Just try to slow it down and do what you need to do on a daily basis."
That steady approach carries into every part of the job, from workouts to recovery to nutrition. Burniston and the team's medical staff emphasize what they call the "Cat 5" approach: compete, care and consistency -- all of which shape the culture and, ultimately, championship success.
But for Burniston, this moment isn't about personal achievement.
"Growing up, it was never my goal to win the Stanley Cup. Never," he said. "I know for a fact that the guys in that room -- this is their goal. And if I can be a small part in helping them get there, that's good enough for me."
It's a mindset rooted in humility, and one he says extends beyond hockey.
Burniston often shares a simple reminder: the rearview mirror is smaller than the windshield for a reason.
The focus, he says, should always be on what's ahead.
