Where there is smoke, there is often fire, and the smoke around Tony Diaz, the Iowa Hawkeyes' newest transfer portal wide receiver, is beginning to billow into a gigantic smoke stack.

After defensive players and fellow wide receivers claimed how talented he has been in practice, ESPN believes he could be the key to taking the Hawkeyes' offense to new heights as an outside presence in the passing game. Now, quarterbacks, specifically Jeremy Hecklinski, are getting on board, complimenting his skill set.

"Tony Diaz has already proven he’s going to be an incredible player here at Iowa," Hecklinski said of Tony Diaz's play with Iowa during spring practice.

Despite having just one year of collegiate football under his belt, he proved that he can jump onto the scene and play right away. Last year at UT Rio Grande Valley, he posted 875 yards and 11 touchdowns on 68 receptions, with home run ability, as displayed by a season-long reception of 75 yards.

Diaz came to Iowa this offseason via the transfer portal after spending 2025 with the Vaqueros. At 5-foot-11 and 176 pounds, Tony Diaz, the product of San Marcos, Texas, could be the explosiveness that offensive coordinator Tim Lester has been looking for to unlock more of the passing attack.
