Colton McComb, a 6’2”, 210-pound linebacker prospect out of Memorial High School (Edmond, Oklahoma), committed to Kansas State’s 2027 recruiting class on April 4th.

McComb is currently rated as a 3* prospect by the Rivals Industry Rankings, but I wouldn’t be shocked to see him add a 4th star to his rating in the near future, based on his impressive offer list. Overall, he is ranked as the 32nd-best linebacker and 12th-best overall prospect in Oklahoma for the 2027 class.

The Wildcats beat out a listed offer from his home state Oklahoma Sooners, which is always a difficult proposition. In addition to the Oklahoma offer, McComb was receiving interest from respectable Big 12 schools Baylor and Oklahoma State. He also had a listed offer from Kansas.

As a junior, he registered 88 tackles and 3.5 tackles for loss on the defensive side of the ball and ran for 263 yards and 4 touchdowns on 45 carries and 7 receptions for 102 yards and 2 touchdowns. He’s expected to once again pull double duty for his high school in the 2026 season, but is being recruited strictly as a linebacker for Kansas State.

In addition to his time on the gridiron, McComb also participates in track and field for Memorial, putting up some impressive numbers in the shot put, long jump, and running the 100 and 200. According to On3 Sports, he also has a 4.59 40-yard dash in his back pocket.

Thoughts

It’s hard not to see some Austin Romaine in McComb’s game. Like Romaine, he’s a tall, athletic, sideline-to-sideline linebacker prospect who plays on both sides of the ball for his high school. He looks like an ideal fit at linebacker for defensive coordinator Jordan Peterson’s 4-2-5 scheme because of his ability to get downhill and make tackles in the run game and cover tight ends and backs in the passing game. You’ve also got to think that his time on offense in high school means that he has solid ball skills in zone coverage.

This dude is an A-T-H-L-E-T-E and exactly the type of versatile, high-ceiling recruit I expect this coaching staff to covet. He’s obviously going to need to add some weight to hold up in the run game, but he’s got plenty of room on his 6’2” frame to add that weight without losing his speed. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him show up on campus at 220+. If he does arrive with enough size to hold up in the Big 12, it would not surprise me to see him compete for early playing time.

This was a huge win on the recruiting trail for Jordan Peterson’s new defensive staff, showing they’re willing and able to compete for some of the best talent in the Midwest.

I’m hype about this addition to the 2027 class, and while I don’t want to tell you how to fan…if I were you, I’d be hype as well.
