It promises to be an important game for many of the Barcelona players, including the new signing Anthony Gordon, who will play his first competitive game at the Metropolitano.
Barcelona’s poor record against Atleti last season has already been well-documented, but this particular game is even more important for Gordon, who has had a bad precedent as well.
The poor precedent

As reported by Diario SPORT, Gordon has faced Atletico Madrid only once in his career. It was in August last year in the Sepa Cup, and it wasn’t the best of experiences for the winger.
Deployed through the middle as Newcastle United slipped to a 2-0 defeat, it was a bruising afternoon for Gordon.
The Englishman found fierce resistance from the Atleti defence and was eventually forced off in the 85th minute due to ankle discomfort.
This could be an early reminder that Diego Simeone’s men could employ the same method when it comes to putting a halt to Gordon in the final third.
This time, however, the Barcelona player will operate from the flanks, which should give the Englishman a higher degree of freedom.
Pressure slowly growing

With three goals and five assists in all competitions, it will be perhaps unfair to criticise Gordon’s performances since joining Barcelona in the summer.
The winger has won his battle with Karim Adeyemi for the left wing role, and established himself as a first-team regular.
Yet, question marks remain. Gordon notably endured a poor outing against Real Madrid in the season’s first El Clasico and is still yet to score his first away goal in La Liga.
His only goals in La Liga so far have come at home against Getafe and Alaves. That is quite a modest tally for a player of his quality.
A strong performance against Atletico Madrid, to that end, could serve as an ideal confidence-booster for the former Newcastle United starlet, as he looks to solidify his role in Flick’s setup.
