New Zealand bring in Matt Fisher as concussion substitute to replace Blair Tickner in Wellington

A concussion substitute was availed during the second ODI between New Zealand and India in Wellington on Saturday, when the hosts replaced Blair Tickner with Matt Fisher during the innings break.

Tickner was hit by a short ball from Kamboj in the 41st over of the innings, and he was dismissed for 2 in that same over.

The 33-year-old pacer had a decent outing in the opening match, where he bowled four overs and made 34 off 23 balls, even though New Zealand eventually lost that game by the DLS method in Auckland.

Fisher made his ODI debut against West Indies in July, and the Wellington game is his first one-day appearance on home soil. He has played seven matches for New Zealand across formats so far and has taken eight wickets.

His rise has been quick. He was fast-tracked into the squad last year after head coach Rob Walter noticed his pace while he was working as a net bowler ahead of the Zimbabwe tour in August.

What is concussion sub in cricket? ICC rule explained

The International Cricket Council's (ICC) clause 1.2.7 for playing conditions in Tests, ODIs and T20Is dedicates an entire section for concussion replacement regulations. Read the full document here.

The clause suggests:

  • 1.2.7.2 The Concussion Replacement Request must be submitted as soon as possible after the incident specified in clause 1.2.7.1.3.2 if a Concussion Replacement is to be permitted.
  • 1.2.7.3. The ICC Match Referee should ordinarily approve a Concussion Replacement Request if the replacement is a like-for-like player whose inclusion will not excessively advantage his/her team for the remainder of the match.
  • 1.2.7.4 In assessing whether the nominated Concussion Replacement should be considered a like-for-like player, the ICC Match Referee should consider the likely role the concussed player would have played during the remainder of the match, and the normal role that would be performed by the nominated Concussion Replacement.
  • 1.2.7.5 If the ICC Match Referee believes that the inclusion of the nominated Concussion Replacement, when performing their normal role, would excessively advantage their team, the ICC Match Referee may impose such conditions upon the identity and involvement of the Concussion Replacement as he/she sees fit, in line with the overriding objective of facilitating a like-for-like replacement for the concussed player. For clarity, a concussion replacement will not be permitted to bowl during the innings and/or for the remainder of the match if the replaced player was suspended from bowling for any reason at the time they were replaced.
  • 1.2.7.6 The ICC Match Referee may, in reviewing a Concussion Replacement Request made in accordance with clause 1.2.7.1.3, request any such further information as may be required in order to make the determination required under clauses 1.2.7.4 and 1.2.7.5.
  • 1.2.7.7 The decision of the ICC Match Referee in relation to any Concussion Replacement Request shall be final and neither team shall have any right of appeal.
  • 1.2.7.8 Once the Concussion Replacement has been approved by the ICC Match Referee, the replaced player shall play no further part in the match.
  • 1.2.7.9 Both the Concussion Replacement and the replaced player shall be considered to have played in the match for records and statistical purposes.

According to ICC's 8.2 regulation, "A Concussion Replacement is a player who takes the place of a player who has been replaced in accordance with the process set out in clause 1.2.7, and who for the remainder of the match replaces that player on that side’s list of nominated players, being able to take a full part in the match.

"A Concussion Replacement Request is the notification made to the ICC Match Referee in accordance with the process set out in clause 1.2.7.3. The Team Medical Representative is the individual designated as having responsibility for the assessment of any head or neck injury sustained by a player as set out in clause 1.2.7.2
