Robert Smethurst was arrested in Wilmslow, Cheshire, on 19 May on suspicion of controlling and coercive behaviour.

Cheshire Police said the former co-owner of the National League North club had since been released without further action "due to insufficient evidence" following "a thorough investigation".

Smethurst said: "Of course I am relieved but I knew 100% that I was not guilty."

The 48-year-old bought the club out of insolvency in 2020 and installed former manager Robbie Savage.

Under his leadership, the club secured a FA Cup giant killing win last season after beating holders and Premier League side Crystal Palace 2-1.
