The former top NFL insider for The Athletic who became embroiled in scandal this offseason after numerous photos surfaced showing her cozy and seemingly intimate relationship with New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel is set to return “next week” according to a report by Mike Florio in Pro Football Talk.
“Per a source with knowledge of the situation, Russini has begun getting the word out to people in the league that she’ll be returning to work ‘next week,'” Florio reports, indicating that it is “unclear” for what outlet she’ll be working for, or what job she will be doing.
Russini resigned from The Athletic in April, one week after the New York Post published the first batch of photos showing her and Vrabel together at a high-end resort in Arizona. In her letter of resignation, Russini maintained that there was no foul play between her and Vrabel.
“Rather than allowing this [scandal] to continue, I have decided to step aside now – before my current contract expires on June 30. I do so not because I accept the narrative that has been constructed around this episode, but because I refuse to lend it further oxygen or to let it define me or my career,” Russini wrote at the time.
Last month, the New York Post reported that Russini had hired crisis management expert Melissa Nathan, one of the first signs that the veteran NFL reporter was eyeing a return to media. Russini has not made any public statements since her resignation in April.
Whether Russini will return in a capacity that relies on her credibility as a reporter, or in a role that is more personality-focused, is unclear. No doubt, Russini maintains a large rolodex of contacts throughout the league, though those sources’ willingness to speak candidly with her might be compromised after the scandal.
Russini has long been able to hold court in more casual settings, however, and would likely command an audience even without dishing out NFL scoops.
