Fans get creative. At Game 7 of the WNBA Finals Saturday between the Valkyries and the Atlanta dream, fans went out of the way to ensure their Halloween costumes were Ballhalla-themed - or vice versa.
Joseph Gu strolled around outside Chase Center with a white piece of cardboard taped in front of his head, with a hole for his face in the middle. It wasn't totally clear what his costume was, until his friend, Janelle Lee, pulled out a net.
He held his arms out in a circle in front of him and let the net drape down: Gu was dressed as a basketball hoop.
Lee was dressed as Valkyries coach Natalie Nakase, and they had two friends on the way: one dressed as a basketball, the other dressed as guard Kaitlyn Chen (who had her own Halloween costume Saturday).
"I'm super stoked. We've got a lot of dogs out there, our girls like to ball, and they say defense wins championships," Gu said.
Sharon Hermosura, from Union City was also hanging out in Thrive City, just outside Chase Center, but she was kind of hard to see. That's because she was wearing a giant inflatable pumpkin.
"We have dedicated fans who are in there," she said, speaking through the triangle-shaped eye of her pumpkin costume. "They could be trick or treating, but they're out here in Ballhalla
One woman, who declined to give her name (but requested to be called Mary Poppins from San Jose), was dressed as a Valkyries-themed Mary Poppins. She wore black dress with a stuffed animal of Violet (the Valkyries mascot) on her umbrella. She held a sign saying "SupercaliBALHALListicexpialidocious," the famous song from the 1964 film "Mary Poppins."
She bought tickets for Game 7 when the Valkyries were down 20 points to the Atlanta Dream in Game 6 - to be a part of the "serendipitous" combination that is Game 7 and Halloween, she said.
Some fans just wanted an affordable costume to wear while watching the game on the big screen outside of Chase Center - an experience that costs far less than being inside.
Colleen De La Vega and Mercedes Rivas, from San Mateo, dressed in all orange as the Lorax, the fictional TK created by Dr. Seuss. The costume cost $30, they said, with orange making the color their violet Valkyries T-shirts pop.
"I was hopeful that they were gonna lose Game 6 so we could come out here and show up for Game 7," Rivas said.
For Gu, the experience represented the definition of All Hallow's Eve in the Bay Area.
"There's nothing more S.F. than celebrating Halloween at Ballhalla," Gu said.
