Coach Kalani Sitake’s BYU Cougars traveled to Orlando to face the UCF Golden Knights and came out with a 39-31 loss, their first of the season. The loss came in heartbreaking fashion, and it came just after BYU rose to number one in the College Football Week 8 Power Rankings, ahead of the Miami Hurricanes, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, and other top teams.

After the game, Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy couldn’t help but notice that something didn’t seem right on a field goal attempt that resulted in BYU being whistled for roughing the kicker. The penalty gave UCF another chance to score a game-winning touchdown, which they did.

“We’re in double-overtime, BYU’s fightin’ for absolute life like they always do…And they’re gonna call this roughing the kicker? What are we doin’? The lineman just (fell) down…What a world, is that roughing the kicker? They’re screwin’ us, they’re screwin’ the Cougs!” Portnoy said, adding “WORST CALL EVER!”

BYU had a chance to tie the game with a fourth and goal throw from the four-yard-line, but it fell incomplete giving the Golden Knights a controversial victory. Bear Bachmeier threw for over 250 yards on the day, but was outshined by Keyone Jenkins of the Knights, who threw for nearly 300 yards and three touchdowns in a winning effort.

As Bachmaier’s final pass hit the turf, BYU fans’ minds around the country raced back to the controversial roughing-the-kicker penalty, and perhaps back to the crazy scene that unfolded in Provo against the Fighting Irish. The Cougars have been through a lot this season, and are still 6-1 with College Football Playoff hopes. It wasn’t the result they wanted before Week 8’s game, but it’s where they’re at after a tough, and controversial, loss to the Knights.
