Is C.J. Stroud Taking a Different Approach to His Next Contract With the Texans?
· Yahoo Sports
C.J. Stroud has a lot riding on the 2026 NFL season. The Houston Texans quarterback turned down a reported contract offer worth more than $50M per year, choosing to bet on himself instead. With his performances strengthening his case for a bigger payday, the pressure to deliver is growing; however, Stroud insists that money isn’t driving his approach.
Rather than getting caught up in negotiations, Stroud is sticking to a lesson he learned long before entering the NFL. For the quarterback, staying grounded, leaning on trusted mentors, and focusing on football matter far more than chasing headlines about his next deal.

His experience navigating name, image, and likeness (NIL) opportunities taught him not to let financial opportunities pull him away from the game.
“Something I was taught when I first went to Ohio State was just keep the main thing the main thing. And football has always been there and it’s not going nowhere, I hope not.”
“I think if you chase the deal or the contract, I think that’s when you kind of lose yourself.”
“I think I kind of take the same approach, like keeping the main thing the main thing and chasing the game, not chasing what people would think is the bag or whatever.”
“So grateful that I have a lot of people who keep me focused on what’s important in life.”

That approach comes at an important point in Stroud’s career. According to a report cited by The Sporting News, the Texans offered him an extension worth well above $50 million annually; however, he declined to lock himself into the deal. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported that Stroud saw an opportunity to benefit from a rising quarterback market and his potential place near the top of it.
So far, the decision looks promising. In six starts, the player has amassed 1,714 yards, nine touchdown passes, and a single interception. With his performance in those six games, Stroud has become second in the NFL in passing yardage, putting himself in an excellent position for a substantial raise in contract value should he continue playing like that.
Nevertheless, Stroud admits that it is difficult at times to stay concentrated on the game. The individual appreciates everyone who helps him see things clearly but also recognizes the distractions and even mistakes associated with being a man.
However, the 25-year-old Stroud is struggling on the field as the Texans start their season poorly with a 2-4 record; his individual numbers offer hope for better times ahead. Additionally, the team added receiver Marvin Harrison Jr., giving the quarterback even more firepower.
The next contract remains a subject of interest, but, at least for the time being, Stroud does not seem too concerned with contract matters, leaving everything in the hands of his agent. In the case of continued success, the money will be earned naturally.
