Ravens’ Tyler Loop reportedly gets competition as Jesse Minter calls position ‘results driven’

Tyler Loop lined up for a 49-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter in Cleveland with the Baltimore Ravens leading 10-3. He missed, and the Browns scored the game’s final 10 points, winning 13-10 on Andre Szmyt’s 37-yard field goal as time expired.

On Monday, Jordan Schultz reported that the Ravens are signing Jake Moody to their practice squad as competition for Loop. It is the second time Baltimore has added Moody this year, after a brief practice-squad stint late in the summer while Loop was missing kicks in the preseason.

Minter was asked earlier on Monday about adding another kicker. “Like any position, you’re always looking at ways of how to impact the roster. That one being no different.” Minter said.

“There’s a confidence level for how he prepares and how he practices and operates and strikes the ball. But at the same time, that position itself is completely results driven.” Jesse Minter said at his Monday news conference.

Loop is 10-of-13 on field goals this season, a line that includes a 56-yard walk-off in overtime against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 3. He is 2-of-5 from 40 to 49 yards, and the misses have come when Baltimore was trying to stretch a lead. His rookie season ended just the same way, with a missed field goal on the final play at Pittsburgh that would have won the AFC North.

“You could argue that second-half missed field goals are no different than turning the ball over in those situations.” Minter said.

Is Jake Moody actually an upgrade on Tyler Loop?

Moody, a 2023 third-round pick of the San Francisco 49ers, is 64-of-82 on field goals for his career, a 78 percent rate, and 8-of-14 from 50 yards and beyond. Loop made 30 of his 34 attempts as a rookie, an 88 percent clip.

San Francisco released Moody after he missed two kicks in the 2025 opener, following a 2024 season in which he made 70.6 percent of his field goals. He went 8-for-9 in two games filling in for the Chicago Bears and 10-for-11 in six games with the Washington Commanders, who then cut him in August after he lost a camp battle to Drew Stevens.

Moody kicked at Michigan while Minter was the Wolverines’ defensive coordinator, and he was in Chicago last season with Declan Doyle, now Baltimore’s offensive coordinator.

The signing tells Loop his margin for error is gone without handing the Ravens a more accurate kicker.

Baltimore sits behind Cleveland in the AFC North despite the same 4-2 record. The Cincinnati Bengals, at 3-2, visit on Sunday, and Lamar Jackson remains day-to-day with an ankle injury.
