Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy is making sure his team stays focused on what it can control, even as outside attention continues to surround his comments about needing to “clean your own house.”

McCarthy recently explained the phrase, emphasizing the importance of evaluating Pittsburgh's own performance rather than spending too much time worrying about its opponents.

“It's the most important video you watch of the week,” McCarthy said. “We spend so much time talking about the other guy, you've got to make sure you're talking about yourself. That's, clean your own house—make sure we get that part right—self-scout, you do that all the time. We did that again today. Don't want to alarm anybody.”

The comments reinforce McCarthy's focus on accountability and correcting mistakes through film review. Rather than suggesting a major shake-up is coming, the coach is stressing the importance of identifying areas for improvement within the team.

Steelers Coach Addresses ‘Clean Your House’ Comments

McCarthy's original remarks drew attention after Pittsburgh's loss to the Cleveland Browns in Week 4. Following the defeat, the coach acknowledged that the Steelers needed to improve their consistency.

“We need to clean our own house,” McCarthy said at the time, per numerous sources.

The wording prompted speculation about the state of the locker room, particularly after quarterback Aaron Rodgers and McCarthy had a heated exchange during the Browns game.

However, the coach's explanation centered on evaluating the team's own performance and finding ways to improve before turning its attention to the next opponent.

Tight end Pat Freiermuth also pushed back against interpretations that suggested Pittsburgh was dealing with internal turmoil. Speaking about McCarthy's message, Freiermuth explained that the team was reviewing its opening four games and identifying areas where it could improve.

“Everything is good in the locker room. We are working to win,” Freiermuth said, according to Steelers Depot.

McCarthy Wants Steelers to Correct Their Mistakes

Self-scouting gives Pittsburgh an opportunity to evaluate its own execution, identify recurring problems and determine what needs to change before the next game.

That process is especially important for a team trying to establish consistency throughout the season. Reviewing film allows coaches and players to pinpoint mistakes on both sides of the ball rather than focusing exclusively on an opponent's strengths and weaknesses.

McCarthy's latest comments suggest that the Steelers will continue making that evaluation a priority throughout the season.

His closing remark, “Don't want to alarm anybody,”  also served as a lighthearted acknowledgment of how his original wording was received.

The message remains straightforward: Pittsburgh needs to focus on its own performance, clean up its mistakes and put itself in a better position to win.
