Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts will be out for the season after doctors discovered multiple blood clots in his lungs, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN. The Eagles placed Hurts on injured reserve on Friday.

Hurts’ agent, Nicole Lynn, shared in a statement on Monday that Hurts is in stable condition and his treatment will consist of taking blood thinners.

“Jalen’s prognosis is very good, and we expect a full recovery,” Lynn wrote in her statement. “We anticipate that he will have the opportunity to resume contact football activities when off the blood thinners.”

The Pittsburgh Steelers play the Eagles on Nov. 22 at Lincoln Financial Field. Tanner McKee, a sixth-round pick out of Stanford in 2023, is the Eagles’ starter with Hurts out. McKee has played in seven games and has three career starts under his belt with the Eagles.

McKee started in the Eagles’ 25-14 loss to the Carolina Panthers on Sunday. He completed 26 of 45 passes for 215 yards with one touchdown, no interceptions, and a passer rating of 77.5.

Rookie fifth-round pick Cole Payton will serve as McKee’s backup. The Eagles also signed Joe Milton III off the Dallas Cowboys’ practice squad to add depth to the room.

Hurts’ injury was announced on Thursday, via a statement by the Eagles.

“On Thursday, October 8th, Jalen visited the training room after practice requesting treatment for his calf. He informed the medical staff he had been cleated during the Rams game on October 4th. This was his first treatment session for the calf injury following the game, after having practiced in full both Wednesday and Thursday. On Friday, Jalen received treatment, practiced in full, and was added to the practice report,” the Eagles said in a statement.

“Out of an abundance of caution, an ultrasound was performed on Saturday following the team’s flight to London and walkthrough. The ultrasound revealed a superficial blood clot. Our medical staff and doctors in London reviewed the results and concluded that activity and mobility were important and that Jalen could safely play. Doctors recommended a follow-up ultrasound within 72 hours of the game and the return flight to Philadelphia.”

Hurts hinted during his Wednesday press conference that he had something going on: “It was a very unique experience, to say the least. I don’t want to get into the details of kind of leading up to the game or whatnot.”

The Eagles did not notice anything wrong with Hurts during their Week 5 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars in London.

“Jalen played without limitation in the game Sunday, received treatment on Monday and Tuesday, and practiced in full on Wednesday, as reflected in the practice report. Throughout our time in London and this week, we have remained in communication with the league office regarding the matter,” the Eagles said in the statement.

“On Wednesday night, a follow-up ultrasound revealed movement in the small blood clot. Jalen will be out for Sunday’s game vs. the Panthers as we determine the appropriate course of treatment. His health and safety are our highest priority.”
