"I think he's a great play-caller," DeBoer said when asked if he's confident in Grubb's ability as a play-caller after Alabama's 26-10 road loss to Tennessee.
"The thing about, you know, Ryan, is that he's evaluating and is critical on himself as anyone," DeBoer continued. "And it's always been like that. It goes back 15 years, at least, 20 years that I have known him. That's the beauty, I think, in our staff as a whole."
Alabama scored 10 points on 201 yards of offense. Grubb said there's "more questions than answers right now, and I think it starts with me" about the Crimson Tide's lack of success on offense.
"A lot of hours and time put into 10 points, you know, and it's embarrassing," Grubb said. "And if I was a fan or a supporter, I'd be pissed off too."
DeBoer said many of Grubb's calls against the Volunteers were "base calls:" plays Grubb and DeBoer are confident the Crimson Tide can execute and that there are many scenarios that go into a "struggling" offense.
"You're just always trying to make it better," DeBoer said. "You're trying to fit what you do around your personnel. You know, just have a system. It's like, OK, we're plugging these guys in the system. We got to continie to evolve around the players that we have and help them play fast."
Grubb said he still believes in Alabama's offense, one that "fought hard even at the end of the game when when things weren't perfect."
"We had opportunities, and for them to just keep throwing punches and not quit on the sideline, because they certainly could have acted really immature and had some you know emotional maturity issues, and we didn't have that," Grubb said. "And that's not like a consolation prize. It's the expectation that's what they should do, and that's how we should act. But you know I think they are tough. I know they're tough, and we're going to see that come out this week."
Alabama will take on Texas A&M at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24 on ABC.
