It will be a mini-auction and not a mega-auction, so most teams are expected to keep their core groups. The 2025 mega auction reset the squads for the 2025-27 cycle, which makes this December event the last mini-auction of the cycle.

When is the IPL 2027 mini-auction?
The IPL 2027 mini-auction is reported to be on Wednesday, December 16, 2026, with a briefing for the franchises on December 15. The date comes from an internal BCCI message sent to the representatives of all 10 teams. Earlier talks had pointed to December 14.
The venue is the ITC Grand Goa. It would be the first IPL auction held in Goa and the first in India in several years. The last three auctions were held abroad, in Saudi Arabia, Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia has confirmed only that the auction will be held in Goa in December. IPL 2027, the 20th edition, is reportedly set to run from March 14 to May 30, although those dates are also unconfirmed.
IPL 2027 mini-auction: How many players can teams retain?
There is no fixed limit on retentions at a mini-auction. The cap of six players, made up of retentions and Right to Match cards, applied only to the 2025 mega auction. Before the 2026 mini-auction, franchises could keep any number of players, and 173 were retained across the 10 teams.
The real limit is the squad. A franchise can have a maximum of 25 players, including no more than eight overseas players. Teams with full squads have to release players to make room for new signings.
Franchises must submit their retained and released lists to the BCCI by November 15. The retention list decides how much money a team has left, because the fee of each retained player is deducted from the purse. Released players go into the auction pool.
Teams can also trade players. The trading window is open now and closes one week before the auction. It reopens one week after the auction ends and stays open until one month before the season starts.
IPL 2027 mini-auction rules
The IPL 2027 mini-auction follows the player regulations for the 2025-27 cycle, along with the conditions applied at the 2026 mini-auction in Abu Dhabi. The main rules for franchises and players are listed below.
- No Right to Match - RTM cards are not used at a mini-auction, so a team that wants a released player back has to bid for him in the open auction.
- Purse - The total salary cap for 2027 is ₹157 crore, which covers the auction purse, incremental performance pay and match fees. At the 2026 mini-auction, each team had a ₹125 crore limit, and the remaining purses ranged from ₹2.2 crore for Mumbai Indians to ₹64.8 crore for Kolkata Knight Riders.
- Overseas fee cap - At the 2026 auction, an overseas player's maximum fee was the lower of the highest retention price (₹18 crore) and the highest bid at the previous mega auction. Any amount above the cap went to the BCCI's player development programme. It has not been reported whether the cap will apply in 2027.
- Withdrawals - A player picked at an auction who becomes unavailable before the season is banned from the tournament and the player auction for two seasons.
- Uncapped players - A capped Indian player is treated as uncapped if he has not played in the starting XI in international cricket in the previous five calendar years, or if he does not hold a BCCI central contract.
- Impact Player - The rule is part of the 2025-27 regulations, but the BCCI is expected to decide its future in the coming weeks after criticism from several captains and coaches.
