PAWTUCKET – Last month, the United Football League announced that a team would be relocating to the Ocean State, and now that team finally has a name: Rhode Island Breakers.

The Breakers will call Centreville Bank Stadium home for the foreseeable future when they kick off in the spring of 2027.

The team name was announced on Sunday, Oct. 18, in an event open to the public in which head coach AJ McCarron, UFL President & CEO Russ Brandon, Gov. Dan McKee and other Rhode Island officials spoke about what it means to bring a football team to Rhode Island.

The term “Breakers” seems to be in reference to when heavy ocean waves crash along the shoreline and break into foam. The video announcing that the UFL would be expanding to Rhode Island had multiple visuals showing waves crashing into rocky surfaces and coastlines, seemingly as a hint to keen-eyed viewers as to what the name for the team would be.

The franchise’s primary colors will be blue and yellow, with the logo being the state’s initials with a lighthouse replacing the I and running through the middle.

Along with speeches from McCarron and others, the Breakers have set up yard games, food stands and opportunities for fans to purchase season tickets and merchandise and become the first official supporters.

The team has relocated from Birmingham, Alabama, where they were known as the Birmingham Stallions.
