The Boston Celtics on Sunday, Oct. 18, announced they have converted the 24-year-old guard to a two-way contract. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Carter has appeared in 74 NBA games over two seasons with Sacramento, making 12 starts while averaging 6.4 points, 2.7 rebounds and 1.9 assists in 14.8 minutes per game.

This summer, Sacramento traded Carter to Atlanta in a salary-clearing move, and the Hawks later released him. Carter then impressed in his Celtics preseason debut with 17 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals against Cleveland. (He missed Boston’s final three preseason games with an illness.)

A Miami native, he is the son of Anthony Carter, who played 13 seasons in the NBA.

Carter led the Friars to NIT

For Providence fans, Carter is best remembered for a Friars career that culminated with him being named the 2024 Big East Player of the Year. After spending his freshman season at South Carolina in 2021-22, Carter transferred to Providence and played his final two college seasons with the Friars under former coach Kim English. His breakout came during the 2023-24 season, when the 6-foot-2 guard started all 33 games and posted career highs of 19.7 points, 8.7 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game.

Carter was the catalyst for a Friars team that finished 21-14 overall and reached the NIT, making him the third Providence lottery pick since the format was introduced in 1985.

What is an NBA two-way deal?

A two-way deal allows a player to split time between an NBA team and its minor league affiliate in the NBA G League – in this case, the Maine Celtics, based in Portland, Maine.

As part of the related roster moves, Boston waived forwards Tucker DeVries and Gabe McGlothan and guards Hayden Gray and Milos Uzan.

Boston opens the 2026–27 regular season on the road against the Detroit Pistons on Tuesday, Oct. 20, at 3 p.m.
