Alex McPherson seals Auburn football's Georgia upset with 'dream' moment

ATHENS, Ga. — Alex McPherson has one of the better resumes of any kicking specialist in the nation, but his latest kick gave him a career-first: A game-winner.

It was McPherson's leg that delivered a game-winning field goal for Auburn football, in a stunning upset of No. 1 Georgia on Saturday, Oct. 17, at Sanford Stadium. McPherson delivered a 39-yard boot to secure the 27-24 result.
"Honestly, I was like, 'Did that just happen?'" McPherson said postgame. "It's the moments you dream of since you were a little kid."
A fifth-year member of the program, McPherson has been around for plenty. In particular, he has had five head coaches (interims included) and never a winning season in his college career. However, he pointed out a different statistic following the result.
"You've been hearing my whole five years that we've never beat Georgia," McPherson said. "We've never beat them my entire time here — even at home. To be able to do that, No. 1 team, on the road in their home stadium, put them out. It was just such a great feeling."
It was another high point in what has been a miraculous individual story, too, with McPherson navigating health battles early in his Auburn career, missing the entire 2024 season and eventually receiving diagnoses of ulcerative colitis and Chron's disease before returning with improved health and strength last season.
"Two years ago, I was here and I was sick, and I wasn't playing," McPherson said. "If you told me two years from now, on the same night, you're going to have the game-winner, I don't think I would have believed you. ... That's for all of us. It's not just for me; it's for the whole team and the program. Just grateful for that."
